How to rotate, reorder and delete PDF pages

Common page problems

Scans are often the culprit. A page fed into the scanner sideways, a document scanned in the wrong order, or a blank page in the middle are all easy to fix, but only if you can see the pages. That is why a thumbnail view is the fastest way to tidy a PDF.

Rotating the whole document

If every page is sideways, use the Rotate PDF tool. Choose 90, 180 or 270 degrees and the new orientation is saved into the file, so it opens correctly in any viewer.

Fixing individual pages

  1. Open the Organize Pages tool and upload your PDF. Thumbnails of every page appear.
  2. Drag a thumbnail to a new position to reorder pages.
  3. Rotate a single page to the left or right using its controls.
  4. Mark any page you want to remove. Deleted pages are left out of the saved file.
  5. Save, and download the new PDF.

Tips for a clean result

  • Work from a copy. The tool creates a new file and leaves your original untouched, but keeping the source is a good habit.
  • Zoom out on large documents. Reorder in stages, moving whole sections first and single pages last.
  • After saving, scroll through the finished file once to confirm the order and the orientation of every page.

Why pages end up sideways or out of order

Most page problems begin at the scanner. Automatic document feeders can pull a page in crooked or turn it. A batch scanned in two passes, front sides and then back sides, produces pages in the wrong sequence. A stapled document may be scanned in the wrong direction. Phone scanning apps can also save a page in landscape orientation even though the text is upright.

These are all quick to fix once you can see every page at a glance, which is what a thumbnail view gives you.

Rotating: whole document or single pages

If every page is turned the same way, the Rotate PDF tool fixes the whole document in one step. If only some pages are wrong, which is more common with mixed batches, the Organize Pages tool lets you rotate each page individually using its own controls.

Rotation is saved into the new file, so the corrected orientation holds in any viewer, on any device. It is not a temporary view setting.

A method for reordering long documents

Reordering a long document one page at a time is tedious and easy to get wrong. A better approach is to work in layers.

  1. Look at the thumbnails and identify the sections, such as introduction, main body and appendices.
  2. Move whole sections into the right order first.
  3. Within each section, move the individual pages that are out of place.
  4. Delete duplicates and blank pages last, so you do not lose track of positions while moving things.
  5. Save, then scroll through the finished file from the first page to the last.

Removing pages safely

Deleting pages is permanent in the new file, but your original stays untouched, so there is little risk as long as you keep it. Blank pages from double-sided scanning are a common target. Before deleting a page that looks blank, check that it is not a page with very light content, such as a faint stamp or a page intentionally left blank as part of the numbering.

If you want to keep the removed pages for later, extract them with Split PDF before you delete them.

Frequently asked questions

Does reordering reduce quality? No. Pages are moved as they are, so quality is unchanged.

Can I undo a change before saving? You can adjust the arrangement freely before you save, since the new file is only written when you save it.

Will page numbers update automatically? Numbers that are already printed on the pages stay as they are. If the order changes, use the Page Numbers tool on the final file.

Is my file uploaded? No. Everything happens in your browser, so the document stays on your device.

Working through a messy scan step by step

The order of work matters. Rotating first makes every page recognisable, and deleting before reordering means you handle fewer thumbnails. Leaving the fine reordering until last keeps the job manageable. Here is the sequence.

  1. Open the file in the Organize Pages tool and wait for all thumbnails to load. Large documents take a little longer.
  2. Fix orientation first. Rotate every sideways or upside-down page so you can recognise pages at a glance.
  3. Delete obvious blanks and duplicates once orientation is right.
  4. Reorder sections, then individual pages, as described above.
  5. Save the new file and check it against the original, page by page, in the places where you made changes.

Preventing the problem next time

A few habits at the scanner save a lot of tidying later. Feed pages in a consistent direction and orientation, and keep the stack squared so pages are not pulled in crooked. If your scanner does double-sided scanning, check the output setting for how the back sides are stored, because that choice decides whether pages arrive in order. For a long document, scan in smaller batches and check each batch before starting the next one, so a mistake costs you ten pages of rework instead of two hundred.

When you use a phone scanning app, review the preview before saving. Most apps show the page orientation and crop, and correcting it at that point takes a second.
